My style has always been ultra-feminine. I love pastels, florals, and prints, and I really don’t like to wear black. It’s so silly because black is by far the easiest color for anyone to pull off, the easiest to style and match, and it’s appropriate for almost any occasion, but for some reason I just don’t love the way I feel in it.
So, I decided to go outside of my comfort zone and style a unique “night-out” look where the main color in the ensemble was black. This is for all you girls like me who know they should have more black pieces in their closet but can’t figure out how to wear them and still keep their overall feminine style.
The first step was deciding to style separates instead of a dress or jumpsuit. I chose a black skirt (which is only $10 by the way!), giving me plenty of options to lighten up the look with the top. Also, I didn’t choose just any skirt, this one has a gorgeous scallop hem that really adds a girly feel to it. It’s short enough for a night out, but the scallops also add a classier element to it. Then, I chose a white lace one-shoulder top, which made the look much lighter and more feminine. For me, I think the color that’s going to be closest to your face is the color you should like the most or suits you the best out of the outfit, and the bottom half can be more of a risk or a color that may not go great with your skin tone.
Then came the fun part; the accessories. I’m in LOVE with purses. I am way more likely to choose a new bag over anything else when I’m shopping and I have way too many of them, but I don’t have that many black ones, so I was excited to choose one for this outfit. I wandered over to Rent the Runway because I couldn’t even commit to buying one, and found this amazingly chic fan clutch. Once I had that picked, I thought some lace-up heels would be just the ticket! I decided to invest in a pair of black heels and couldn’t resist this amazing pair. Pretty much all I wear now are shoes made of comfortable materials (like suede, faux suede and soft leather) because I have had too many nights out when my feet hurt so badly that all I wanted to do was go home, and these faux suede lace-ups were perfect! I thought the bag and the heels added a fun and unique element to an otherwise simple outfit.
Is there a color you have a hard time styling??
